The Forgotten Deep Leads of Sofala

Revisiting the Turon: Why the richest pockets were missed by the 'old-timers'.

Sofala is Australia's oldest surviving gold town, yet its greatest secrets are often buried beneath meters of shifting river gravel. To find gold in the Turon River today, you must look where others were too exhausted to dig.

Understanding Deep Leads

A "Deep Lead" is an ancient riverbed that has been buried by newer layers of sediment or volcanic rock. In Sofala, the Turon River has shifted its course many times over millions of years. The "new" river we see today often sits side-by-side with its ancient, gold-rich predecessor.

The old-timers found the shallow leads easily. What remains are the Deep Leads — pockets of gold trapped in the vertical "book-leaf" slate bedrock, often buried under 2 to 3 meters of "overburden" (worthless common gravel).

The Art of Crevice Mining

The bedrock in Sofala is unique. It consists of tilted layers of slate. When gold is washed down the river, it falls into these vertical cracks like a natural piggy bank.

"The gold in the Turon isn't sitting on top. It's wedged two inches deep in the slate. If you aren't using a pry-bar to crack the bedrock, you're missing 90% of the paystreak."

Technical Setup: High-Bankers vs Sluices

Because the paystreak is often high on the river banks (the old river level), you need to bring the water to the gold. A High-Banker (a motor-powered sluice) is the standard tool here. It allows you to process large volumes of gravel systematically.

  • Flow Rate: The Turon has "chunky" gold. You need high water pressure to clear the heavy black sands but keep the gold.
  • Matting: Use a combination of expanded metal and "Dream Mat" to capture both the fine flakes and the heavy nuggets.

Prospecting Intelligence

Finding these ancient leads requires modern maps. Our proprietary GPS overlays show the projected paths of the ancient Turon riverbeds.

Summary

Sofala is a technical field. It rewards those who understand geology and are willing to put in the "hard yards" to reach the bedrock. The "Golden Fleece" of the Turon is still there, waiting for the next generation of prospectors.
