Welcome, Prospector!
Congratulations on taking your first step into the world of gold prospecting! New Zealand has a rich gold mining history, and there's still gold out there waiting to be found. This Quick Start Guide will give you everything you need to get started.
The Law: What You Need to Know
In New Zealand, you can legally fossick for gold in designated areas using non-motorised hand tools without a permit. This means:
- Allowed: Gold pans, sluice boxes, classifiers, hand tools
- Not allowed: Dredges, motorised equipment
- Where: Only in the 16 official designated fossicking areas
This guide covers 3 beginner-friendly locations. For access checks, starter gear, terrain prompts, panning workflow, and printable field notes, check out the NZ Starter Fossicking Guide at paystreak.io/nz/guide/premium

Basic Gold Panning Technique
Fill Your Pan
Scoop gravel from the river — look for areas behind large rocks or on the inside of bends where gold settles.
Submerge and Shake
Submerge the pan in water and shake it side-to-side. This helps heavy gold settle to the bottom.
Remove Large Rocks
Pick out the large stones by hand. Check each one for attached gold pieces.
Swirl and Tip
Gently swirl the pan and tip it forward to wash lighter material over the edge. The gold stays at the bottom.
Final Reveal
When only black sand remains, swirl gently. Gold will appear as bright specks. Use your snuffer bottle to pick them up.
💡 Pro Tip:
Don't rush! Beginners lose gold by panning too fast. Take your time and let gravity do the work.
