The First Discovery

In 1852, Charles Ring triggered the first rush at Driving Creek. While the alluvial pockets were small, they led to the discovery of the Martha Mine and other massive quartz reefs. Coromandel gold is typically low-silver (high-purity) and often riven within microscopic black sands that concentrate on the beaches after Pacific storm events.

Access Advisory

There is no designated permit-free fossicking area on the North Island — NZPAM lists none in Coromandel. Any gold recovery here needs an NZPAM minerals permit plus landowner or DOC permission. Verify boundaries before any fieldwork.

PRO GRID ACCESS

Post-Storm Sat-Scan

After major storms, beach gold concentrations change. Pro users receive high-res satellite alerts when black sand levels reach critical discovery thresholds.
