PILGRIM'S REST

In 1873, Alex Patterson found gold in a stream that he called "Pilgrim's Rest." Within a year, over 1,500 miners had descended on this lush mountain valley. Today, the town is a National Monument and a gateway to the rich Mpumalanga goldfields.

Security & Zama Zamas

South Africa has significant issues with illegal mining ("Zama Zamas"). **Never prospect alone.**

Local Knowledge: Join a guided tour or a local panning club. Most productive areas are under active mining leases or heritage protection. Access is strictly controlled.

Blyde River

The river that started it all. Fine, flaky gold is still found in the gravel traps after heavy summer rains.

Peach Tree Creek

One of the legendary tributaries where early miners found massive alluvial deposits in the red mountain soil.

Tailings Re-mining

Many modern operations in the district focus on re-processing the massive tailings piles left by 19th-century operations.

Tactical Intel: The "Dolomite" Trap

The geology of Pilgrim's Rest is dominated by **Malmani Dolomite**. This rock is prone to dissolution, forming deep, natural potholes and "cavities." **Search the potholes.** Gold can be trapped deep inside these limestone-like pockets for thousands of years. If you find a dry pothole on a high bench, it could be a literal treasure chest.

Target: Dolomite Potholes
Tech: Crevicing / Suckers
