Western Australia is the spiritual home of the modern nugget hunter. With highly mineralized red soil and vast expanses of public land, it is a detectorist's paradise.

Greenstone Belts

WA's gold is locked within Archean Greenstone Belts—some of the oldest crust on the planet. Over billions of years, the land has remained stable and dry, allowing gold to accumulate inresidual soils (laterite) and salt lake systems. This is "detecting country" where nuggets are often found just inches from the surface.

Field Tips: Signature Patches

Kalgoorlie

The Super Pit and the Golden Mile. The heart of Australian gold mining.

Leonora

Home of the Sons of Gwalia mine. Vast open plains and monster nuggets.

The Pilbara

Ancient, sun-baked rock. Marble Bar and Nullagine offer extreme heat and extreme rewards.

Where the first WA gold rush began. Remote, rugged, and historic.

Official Sources & Current Status

Verify Before You Go — Last Checked 14 Aug 2026

Tenure and land status change constantly, and only the official records are authoritative. We don't publish claim counts here. Start with these official sources, then confirm current conditions with the relevant authority before fieldwork.

WA Regional Protocol

  • Hardware Pick: The GPZ 7000 with ZVT technology is the only way to find deep slugs in the Murchison. It hits 40% deeper than the GPX series in this ground.
  • Survival Rule: Satellite phones and 20L of spare water per person are mandatory for outback prospecting. Cell coverage is zero.
Respect established pastoral leases. Always close gates and notify stations if entering through common tracks.

Miner's Right

In WA, you MUST hold a current Miner's Right for a small fee. This allows you to prospect on crown land and certain types of leases. Always respect Aboriginal Heritagesites and private pastoral leases.

The PI Advantage

WA soils are notoriously loud. A standard VLF detector will struggle. To find gold here, you needPulse Induction (PI) technology—specifically the GPX 6000 orGPZ 7000—to punch through the mineralization.
