The Bullion Buying Bible

Everything you need to know about buying physical gold and silver. From your first 1oz coin to building a serious stack.

Bars vs Coins

Gold/Silver Bars

  • Lower premiums per oz — more gold for your money
  • Stackable, efficient storage
  • Harder to sell partial amounts
  • Less recognizable to average buyer

Best for: Serious investors building large positions

Sovereign Coins

  • Globally recognized (Maple, Eagle, Britannia)
  • Easy to sell in small increments
  • Some have legal tender status (CGT benefits)
  • Higher premiums than bars

Best for: Liquidity, portability, first-time buyers

Choosing a Dealer

Not all bullion dealers are created equal. Here's what to look for:

✓ Reputation

Check reviews on independent sites. Established dealers with years of history are safer.

✓ Transparent Pricing

Premiums should be clearly listed. Compare spot + premium across dealers.

✓ Buyback Policy

Good dealers will buy back what they sell — often at spot or slight discount.

✓ Secure Shipping

Insured, discreet packaging. Signature on delivery for valuable orders.

Understanding Premiums

The premium is the amount you pay above spot price. It covers minting, dealer margin, and market demand.

Your Price = Spot Price + Premium

Typical premiums (gold):

  • 1oz coins: 3-8% over spot
  • 1oz bars: 2-5% over spot
  • Larger bars (1kg+): 1-3% over spot

During high-demand periods, premiums can spike significantly. Buy steadily over time (DCA) to average out.

Storage Options

Home Safe

Maximum control, zero fees. But you bear all theft/fire risk. Best: fire-rated, bolted safe.

Best for: Small holdings

Bank Safe Deposit

Secure, insured. But bank hours limit access. Some jurisdictions may freeze boxes.

Best for: Medium holdings

Private Vault

Professional storage, 24/7 access, full insurance. Annual fees 0.5-1% of value.

Best for: Serious stackers
