AMERICAN RIVER

The river that started it all. The North, Middle, and South Forks of the American River drain the heart of the Mother Lode. It remains one of the premier recreational panning rivers in the world.

The Gold

Beautiful river-worn flakes and small nuggets. Flood gold is replenished annually by snowmelt erosion from the high Sierra lodes.

Access

Auburn State Recreation Area (SRA) offers massive stretches of public access on the North and Middle Forks. The South Fork near Coloma is also popular.

Regulations

Hands and pans only in many areas. Suction dredging is currently banned in California. Sluice boxes are permitted in designated areas (check local regulations).

Tactical Intel: Sniping

With dredging banned, the most effective modern tactic is "Sniping"—using a mask, snorkel, and crevice tools to work bedrock underwater. Look for cracks running perpendicular to the current. The gold will be deep in the black sand.

Best Gear: Snorkel & Crevice Tool
Target: Underwater Bedrock
