Is suction dredging legal in California?
No. Suction dredging is unlawful throughout California under state law (Fish and Game Code sections 5653 and 5653.1, as amended by SB 637, effective January 1, 2016). The California Department of Fish and Wildlife cannot issue permits, and violations are prosecuted as criminal misdemeanors. Nonmotorized recreational mining — including hand panning — is not affected by the dredging law.
When is the best time to prospect in California?
Late spring through early fall (June to September) offers the best conditions. Water levels drop after snowmelt, exposing more river bedrock. Summer also provides warmer water for sniping in the deep cracks. Check current fire restrictions — many BLM and Forest Service areas close or restrict access during dry seasons.
What equipment can I use legally on public land in California?
Gold pans, classifiers, and hand tools are treated as casual use on most BLM and Forest Service land open to mineral entry. But rules vary by site: California state parks and several wild and scenic river segments allow only the 'hands and pans' method — no sluice boxes or tools. Always check the managing agency's current rules for the exact area before you go.
Where can I pan for gold for free in California?
Auburn State Recreation Area and South Yuba River State Park allow panning using the 'hands and pans' method. BLM's Merced River Recreation Area near Mariposa permits recreational gold panning and prospecting. Access, parking, and fee rules differ per site — check each agency's page before visiting.
