The Dredging Ban
California has a statewide moratorium on suction dredging. You **CANNOT** use motors to move material in the river. Period.
Hands & Pans Only: Within the State Park, you are generally limited to "Hands and Pans". No sluice boxes, no shovels digging into the bank. You must only process loose river gravels. Check the specific regulations at the Bridgeport Ranger Station.
Bridgeport
The area around the historic covered bridge is the most accessible. It is "Hands and Pans" only, but the easy access makes it great for families.
Edwards Crossing
Further upstream, the gold gets coarser. The terrain is steeper and requires hiking down into the gorge. Always check claim markers outside the park boundaries.
Crevicing
The best tactic here is "crevicing". Use a screwdriver or pry bar to clean out the deep cracks in the bedrock. That is where the heavy gold hides from the spring floods.
Tactical Intel: Sniping
"Sniping" involves using a mask and snorkel to look for gold underwater. You can see the flakes sitting on the bedrock or in the moss. Use a turkey baster or sniper bottle to suck them up. It is effective, legal (usually), and keeps you cool.
